'Best student' is a song from the great Bouzouki master, George Zampetas. During the '60s, greek laika ( popular songs) and rebetika became more accessible to the middle class and were part of everyday life, in radio, movies and of course the major tavernas where families gathered to eat, sing, dance and enjoy life !
This song is making fun of the "proper way" of growing up and has become a very popular tune for all who have had enough of "social conditioning" .
Giorgos Zampetas, Greek music composer, singer and one of the greatest bouzouki artists of all time was born in Metaksourgio of Athens, on the 25th of January 1925. From a very young age, Zampetas showed a great interest in music: as he was helping his father in his barber shop, he secretly played his first melodies on a bouzouki. Anything that was producing sound seemed exciting to him and helped him in his compositions, as he said in his biography not long before he died. In 1932, as a 7 year old first grader, he won his first prize, playing his first song in a school competition.

Ένα καιρό που μ' έστελνε
η μάνα μου σχολείο ω! ω! ω! ω!
κι ο δάσκαλος μου μ' έβαζε
στο πρώτο το θρανίο
Ο πιο καλός ο μαθητής
ήμουνα εγώ στη τάξη ω! ω! ω! ω!
κι όμως οι συναναστροφές
μου βγάλανε το μάτι
English translation
Long time ago, when my mother send me to school
the teacher assigned me to the first row
I was the Best Student in the whole class
and the pride of all my teachers
All my papers had the best score (10)
and if in later life I got the zero (o)
it's all because of a girl
I was the most proper of all
yet my choice of bad company
left me a bad name in the end
