Lyrics:
Nighttime sharpens, heightens each sensation
Darkness wakes and stirs imagination
Silently the senses abandon their defenses
Helpless to resist the notes i write
For I compose the music of the night
(music)

Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendour
Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender
Hearing is believing
Music is deceiving
Hard as lightning, soft as candle light
Dare you trust the music of the night..
Close your eyes for your eyes will only tell the truth
And the truth isn't what you want to see
In the dark it is easy to pretend..
That the truth is what it ought to be...

Softly, deftly, music shall caress you
Hear it, feel it, secretly possess you
Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind
In this darkness which you know you cannot fight
The darkness of the music of the night

Close your eyes start a journey through a strange, new world
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
Close your eyes and let music set you free
Only then can you belong to me

Floating, falling, sweet intoxication
Touch me, trust me, savour each sensation
Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in
To the power of the music that I write
The power of the music of the night

You alone can make my song take flight
Help me make the music of the night

  • @TickleMaTurkey The original director Harold Prince wanted this to be played in the style of high Victorian melodrama which you neither understand nor appreciate. Watch the Making of POTO program if you care to catch up or remain blissfully ignorant.Every production follows this model although each Phantom brings his own style and all are wonderful in their own way with one glaring exception whose name I shall not repeat.

  • @TickleMaTurkey He did not "murder" it, he CREATED it. He was and is the model of the perfect way to sing this song. Show some fucking respect and gratitude to this incredible man, please. Thank you.

  • @godzilla964 You know thats just how I feel ......... Dead!

  • No one else on the planet does this like Michael Crawford .............. thank christ!! He murdered it! The Maaaaayoooooooooosic of the Naaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrght!!!!!!!!

  • Michael Crawford always put heart and soul into his performance. His music is beautiful to listen to and so inspiring. The one and only true Phantom.

  • wooo! Go Frank Spencer! haha

Michael Crawford is the best Phantom of all time!

  • Happy Birthday to the Phantom on Broadway. I may try to make it to Broadway for the 10,000th performance - that will be a special night.

  • No one does this like Michael and no one ever will. His voice is so gorgeous and compelling and he brings such genuine emotion to the role, emotion which comes very easily for him and which does not come easily to others (overwrought is a word that comes to mind). Perhaps it's because he identifies so easily with the character. Michael makes the darkness a beautiful and tangible thing - his voice practically drapes the song in velvet.

  • Every time I hear this song, no matter how much people parody Crawford, I'm always at peace.

  • POTO premiered on Broadway 24 years ago tonight. I'll bet the show with Hugh Panaro will celebrate this amazing milestone. Imagine what it must be like to work at the Majestic Theater and get to see this over and over. Some might think it's too much of a good thing but I'd give it a try. Happy 24th Phantom!
