We investigate a very different perception of beauty in Nigeria, host to the Miss World pageant in November 2002. Girls in the region of Calabar have to be fattened up, so as to find good husbands. Although the practice is both frowned on and illegal, there is no shortage of takers.

@ukusapillage Your logic FAILS badly. Ok, I agree somewhere back in history, whites evolved from blacks, but that doesn't mean blacks stop evolving. Whites just evolved in a different direction suited for a different environment (colder). NOTHING can stop evolving, that's basic biology you Dumb shit.

A lot of subsistence cultures find beauty in fat women because it is so rare. I would say there was a lot of starvation in this tribal area that spawned this. Europe at one time had the ideal beauty as chunkier women also...

I kept having to remind myself that this is a DOCUMENTRY not a MOCKUMENTRY. Its like fattening pigs for market. Mind you the women dont actually seem that fat - by western obese standards! I still cant believe its real! When the women was 'dancing' infront of the men she was a symbol of everything women have battled against.Traditions like this are probably upheld by women bitter that had to endure it so they carry it on as 'tradition' so they dont have to face up to their own pain & humiliation

It is a good thing that Nigerians don't fall for the anorexic with huge artificial breasts craze that Europeans have fallen for but female circumcision is another thing altogether. It is cruel. Although every culture, European, African or Asian seems to want to brutalize women for what they call beauty in some fashion or other. Abuse of women is a universal problem it just comes in different forms depending on where you are.
