Friedrich Nietzsche's science of happiness explained: Nietzsche's theories of passion and emotion ground his philosophy of life and ethics. Nietzsche thought pleasure and pain were not opposite to one another. Rather, like yin and yang, they go together. The strength of one is the strength of the other. Thus to pursue pleasure is to go headfirst towards pain. But the inverse is also true. Nietzcshe's joyful philosophy is based on this insightful perspective. He saw that the strength and health of our passions--our capacity equally for pleasure and pain--is the source of our highest highs and our lowest lows. Nietzsche spurs us to embrace the situation that Kierkegaard called the paradox of existence. The only way to give meaning to our emotions, our actions and our lives is to risk our lives and stake our human, all too human selves on our own limited projects. "Live Dangerously!" spakes Nietzsche. This means risk depression! Risk heartbreak! Risk life! Risk depression for joy. Risk heartbreak for love. Risk life for life.

The music is, of course, Pink Floyd playing Astronomy Domine, live.
And the plane I'm in, for anybody thats interested, is a Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747-400.
We take take off out of Gatwick Airport flying south over snow covered England towards Paradise, AKA, Barbados, and fellow passengers have to hear me lecture on.
