Decca 1076

Henry Busse (1894 - 1955) was a trumpet player noted for the theme and showcase tune "Hot Lips". His distinctive vibrato and soft muted trumpet with Paul Whiteman and later his own band became Busse's trademark. He was born in Magdeburg Germany, came to the U.S. in 1912, joined Whiteman in 1919 and remained until 1928. He rose to some prominence as featured soloist with Whiteman, though not a jazzman. His unique trumpet sound was easily identifiable. His famous solo with Whiteman is on "When Day is Done" (1927). He was co-composer of "Hot Lips," "Wang Wang Blues," "Horn Tootin' Blues," and "Haunting Blues." In the 1930s he led a dance band in the sweet style of the day. In the mid 1930s he had an important engagement at Chicago's Chez Paree which boosted his popularity. By this time his band had developed a light-swinging style with shuffle rhythm and mellow sound which was attractive to dancers. In the later 1930s, he continued to play Chicago and tour New York. He was frequently on the radio including his own series. The band continued through the 1940s and into the 1950s.
