New 5000-series rail cars are now in service on the Pink Line and more are on the way. These state-of-the-art rail cars will replace the oldest cars in the CTA fleet, some of which are more than 40 years old.
I'd be less concerned with the direction of the seats and more concerned with the lack of color of what line a train is running on. What's the point of having a color line system if all the signs are amber?
@Andrew1224gd I agree with you, the seats facing in direction of travel are better in that you won't feel like everyone in the train is staring at you, because they can't. Also, having the seats kept facing forward means that you can take good video while standing up...
@BishopTJH The reason why they took the new train cars out of service was because of a series of equipment/technical problems, the most serious of which ground the entire Loop to a halt when a Pink Line train made up of these cars got stuck at an interchange in the NW corner of the Loop (I was stuck behind it on another train when it happened on Dec 12, 2011). Ever since, they've taken the cars out of service as a precaution measure...

Strange that these cars are already on sick bay to iron out the defects that they found. Who knows how long they will be back in service. :-(
