I just returned from a two-week simulated Mars mission at the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in the Utah desert. Here's a brief two-minute tour of the habitat.

  • Are these simulations really that effective at finding out the psychological interactions and stresses for a long stay on Mars? It would seem to me that this research has already been done and a mountain of data already exists in the historical record, such things as whaling expeditions, polar expeditions, POW camp experiences, etc. This historical data is much more valuable in determining how people react to long periods of isolation. I hope this historical data is used..
