Here's some video I shot of Union Pacific 4-6-6-4 Challenger #3985 arriving in Boone, Iowa, during its trip to the Twin Cities on September 23rd, 2008. The locomotive was displayed in the yard for a day before continuing up the "Spine Line" into Minnesota.

  • why is she not hauling freight. She was designed for freight not passneger

  • 3985 sometimes pulls freight but I think it's usually out around Wyoming. I agree a short passenger train is a pretty easy load for this engine!

  • whats that boxcar behind the Aux Water tenders used for and why is it called a step car?

  • Not sure what it's used for - it may be a tool car, but since the "Art Lockman" is already a tool car of sorts, it may not be. My guess at why it's called a step car is because there are doors on the ends of the boxcar, like a passenger car diaphragm.

  • It's actually used to hall steps so viewers can see inside the cab of 3985 and 844... it hauls other stuff, but It's known for these fold up steps.
