It's actually used to hall steps so viewers can see inside the cab of 3985 and 844... it hauls other stuff, but It's known for these fold up steps.

3985 sometimes pulls freight but I think it's usually out around Wyoming. I agree a short passenger train is a pretty easy load for this engine!

whats that boxcar behind the Aux Water tenders used for and why is it called a step car?

Not sure what it's used for - it may be a tool car, but since the "Art Lockman" is already a tool car of sorts, it may not be. My guess at why it's called a step car is because there are doors on the ends of the boxcar, like a passenger car diaphragm.
