The Basilica of San Miniato al Monte was built by the year 1013 when the Florentine Bishop Hildebrand decided to erect a church dedicated to the Martyr Miniato. One of the victim persecuted by the Emperor Decius. According to the legend, Miniato having survived bouts in the amphitheatre with wild beasts was eventually decapitated and died here where the Basilica stands after having crossed the Arno river bearing his own head. Nice view of Florence from this hill.
