The landlocked and mostly mountainous country of Macedonia in south-eastern Europe proclaimed independence from Yugoslavia in September 1991. Although the economy is improving, with 30% of the population living below the poverty line and a massive 36% of the people being unemployed, many people have a sense of hopelessness regarding the future. Ethnic groups live side by side, but most family, social and religious lives are entirely separate between the groups. In July 2008 it was estimated that nearly 65% follow the Orthodox faith with over 33% being Muslim.
We believe God wants us to be investing in Macedonia for the future, focussing our attention and efforts into the whole area of church planting, raising up strong national churches run by local pastors.
We are therefore launching a new initiative in Macedonia working with two national pastors, Angel Pavlov and Zoki Ilievski, to see new churches planted in the south-east of the country. Two churches have already been established with a third being developed. There are 13 unreached towns within 100 kms of Stip
