A small piece of thorianite (in a plastic container) is radioactive emitting alpha, beta and gamma rays. It gave a marked response with a DSRB-88B dosimeter (Geiger counter).

  • Where do you get a piece of Thorianite like that? The most I've got my DRSB-88 to click is 25cpm with a smoke detector.

  • I've got it from eBay site, SoCal Nevada.

  • Is that harmful?

  • Yes, I believe it is.

  • I ORDERED MINE AND I CANNOT WAIT and i will make a video of it wen i get it YAY RUSSIA

  • well thats good to no incase i will get some

  • NV i just got it...it seems to be sensitive.......

  • i just bought the exact same geiger meter from e bay is it sensetive??

  • I know with my current geiger counter, I can detect Am-241 only with the gamma shield open (only detects Beta & Gamma). So either its gamma rays are too weak to penetrate the shield, or its also emitting beta particles (probably from Protactinium-233, which forms from Np-237 which is from Am-241). But either way, beta + gamma is too low to be hazardous.

  • you are correct in saying it is safe but just so you know, there is no way it only emits alpha radiation. That may be its main decay but gamma is almost always emitted as well.

  • Ofcourse the americium from the smoke detector is safe, its only an alpha emitter. Their is no way you can ingest it because its too small to see.

  • Actually thorium radioactivity isent harmfull . But the ingestion of thorium is.

  • Salut, Ou as-tu pris ton petis Morceau de plastic qui émet du rayon X ??

Ou tu a pris ton petit appareille électronique ?? Merci et Bonne Journée !

  • I had trouble getting my DRSB-88 to click also, until I took the source out of the smoke detector. Don't worry, it's safe. When placed right on the source I got about 70-80cpm.
