The timing belt on this 5S-FE DOHC engine is shredded to less than one half of it's original width.

  • @InfamousPR: Your belt should be fine until 60K. DanielJaegerFilms is right though, replace the tensioners/rollers when you do the job, or else you might find yourself back in there doing the job again not too much later.

  • My oem 1992 toyota 4runner belt is built like that. Half off through the sprocket. It snap about 10,000 miles and have to use my old belt which cover the whole sprocket and still running... email toyota and they said it was the correct one. My uncle bought oem belt from toyota and happen the same. In his, the belt move and cause the timing to be way off the line of align... I told people not to buy from toyota.

  • I took my 2000 Camry some time ago to the shop to get an oil change, the guy called me and said I needed a new timing belt because it still has the original timing belt since new. My Camry is a 2000 model with 51k miles btw. I told him I'll replace it when it starts making noise, and he said I'm at risk of having bent valves. I told him this is a non interference engine and he looked at me like if I was a smart ass. Guess he was mad because he couldn't rip me off. haha

  • Throw a belt and tensioners on there and she's as good as new. Gotta love non interference engines.

  • It's not an interference engine at all, just replace the belt and tensioners, and off you go...unless you want to soak an unknowing customer for "bent valves".

    I sure hope not.

  • What caused the belt wear like this?
