@BronwenDuMor Oh, good lord. Humor is humor and it was stated pretty clearly that it was done as a humorous take on the past. Don't get all conspiracy theorist about female oppression for no reason. Especially since it doesn't exist.

One has to be careful of being too revisionist about the past. Just because there was an etiquette book in the 50's that presented a certain ideal, it does not at all mean it was the norm. We can be very smug about the past and fail to see the injustice in our own society. Are women more liberated now? Or are they simply allowing themselves to be repressed in an entirely new form? (i.e: must be 'super woman' - successful career + mother + ageless skin). Our information age should free us.
