  • If you have your own business and invest 5% (or whatever percentage you chose) in a Roth IRA (most banks will be able to help you get that going) then you'll have saving for retirement, at least as much as you would have with a 401k. I stay home with my three kids and even though we could definitely use more money sometimes, it's so worth it to be able to spend that time with my kids!

  • @TheMarilynbrauer thank you for your input. Yeah it is worth it to me to stay at home right now while my daughter is so young. maybe when shes in school ill start to really think about working and everything but right now im going to enjoy my time with her

  • Hear ye. Hear ye. I was 18 when I got married and although I'm not a mother I was a stay at home wife. I delayed getting my degree and now here I am almost 3-0 working on my degree. Don't wait even if you have to take one class per semester get your degree. It really is all about finding balance, I wish I would've stayed in college when i was married and found that balance. My mom and aunts told me the same things you're saying your mom is telling you. I say listen and take heed. ~Be blessed.

  • @moviegal53 Thank you. I just wish she would understand that im not just being lazy at home all day. Im going to school and trying to be a mom and take care of a family. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices.

  • You are so young, you have time ahead of you but that does not mean you shouldn't plan for your future. Sounds like you have already thought about this and you are making some responsible decisions to suit your family. Your mum will always be concerned because she's wants the best for you. Get your degree, once you have it nobody can take it away from you. Experience is important too, try to get some before your mid 20's. I guess you have to find a balance to cover ur back in this economy.

  • @LouLousLife thank you. it is hard trying to find a balance hopefully i can find a balance

  • You have to choose what is best for your family but your mom is right. You haven't work long so you have not paid much into social security. Being that you are not married if anything was to happen to your BF you would be left all on your own with little if any government help. As for the 401 k you can start saving for your retirement threw your bank which may be a better option anyway. (many people are finding 401 k is not that reliable) but you can start a 401 k anytime you start a job

  • @misstiav8581 Yeah i guess i do just need to worry about school right now. My mom wants me to go to work now but with out my degree i know ill only be able to get a minimal wage paying job. but thanks ive gotten a lot of feedback from a lot of people and i really appreciate it.

  • Hey girly! So here is my two cents. Finish school, get your degree, and while baby is young or babies, do something here or there so that if you do plan to get a career later you will have some experience. It's nice that hubby has a career, but you ALWAYS need a back up plan. And with today's economy you need two people's 401K to survive later on. And like you said, maybe a home business or something, just don't get stuck later without a plan if something happened, cause you never know, right?

  • @megandleila Thank you so much. I get that i'll probably need some type of work experience. but i am also currently in school right now working on my undergrads. I may return to work when my daughter is older. but my mom is telling me that i should return now.
