Tutorial on how to use a standard Xbox 360 controller to navigate in the virtual world of Second Life.
A joystick or even Spacenavigator alternative.

Made at the SL5B 5th birthday event featuring a giant birthday cake.

Values in the joystick settings are:
X Axis Mapping: 0
Y Axis Mapping: 2
Z Axis Mapping: 1
Pitch Mapping: 4
Yaw Mapping: 3
Roll Mapping: -1 (=off)
Zoom Mapping: -1 (=off)

Note that I have enabled "Auto Leveling" So if I release the controls the view automatically centers horizontally. For even more camera freedom try turning this option off.

I had the idea while playing GTA IV piloting a helicopter which really is quite similar to the way I set up the "Joystick Fly Cam" in this video.

  • hi, i hope you can help me. I have install a game pad, it s not Xbox one, but it s very similar, but i have a little problem. It moves the avatar, flycam... that s ok.

but it blocks the cam in the same direction as when you press shift while moving in sl. What can i do? :s

  • You'll have to find axes that will work for you. If you have 2 analog sicks like on the 360 pad you can use one for moving. (left-right, forward-backward) and one for turning/looking (up-down, left-right).

It seems you are missing the axis for "looking/turning" in your configuration.

  • does anyone's avi start walking off when you try too use the controller like your being dragged ?

  • Although your button mapping through me off I found the tutorial as a hole very satisfying. Adding you.

  • I have movement and camera controls down with my 360 controller, but I am wondering if it is possible to link things to the buttons on the controller? For example, link left mouse to B. So I can fire weapons in mouselook with the controller.

  • I have a Saitek controller and I'm really hating the profiler on it, As it breaks often but this helped point me in the right direction for using SL's end of thigns to get it working. Kudos! This makes simboarding a LOT easier..

  • is this the only tutuorial. my cam still moves when i'm staying still.

  • The messenger pad is recognized as a legacy ps/2 keyboard on my wireless gamepad. I can generally use it not only for full text, but extra controls in many PC games. The fact that I can play CS:S with the console and full chat typing without needing to touch a keyboard and mouse says just how nice it works.

  • I wonder if you could get it to reconize teh Messenger pad as well.

  • thank you so much for this! i've been trying to figure out how to use my xbox 360 controller with sl for a while now XD
