At once a political thriller and human drama, THE LIVES OF OTHERS begins in East Berlin in 1984, five years before Glasnost and the fall of the Berlin Wall and ultimately takes us to 1991, in what is now the reunited Germany. THE LIVES OF OTHERS traces the gradual disillusionment of Captain Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Muhe, best known for his lead roles in Michael Haneke's FUNNY GAMES and as Dr. Mengele in Costa-Gavras' AMEN), a highly skilled officer who works for the Stasi, East Germany's all-powerful secret police. His mission is to spy on a celebrated writer and actress couple, Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch) and Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck).

The performances in this film are amazing, but Ulrich Mühe (RIP) who plays Stasi Capt. Wiesler is on another level. The whole story unfolds in his face and eyes, incredible film.
I saw this last week. Enjoyed it so much, I added it to my Top 10 of all time list. I'm sad I didn't get to see it in the theater.
I know there are some people who are really distracted by having to read subtitles - but do make the effort for this one! It's the kind of movie you wish Hollywood knew how to make. It got the best foreign film Oscar, but it really should have won every major category (best picture, directing, screenplay, all acting categories, score, art direction)
I found this to be an excellent movie. The title had a double meaning for me: the way of life of the "Other" Germany, and also the way of life of the central character, who grew to wish he had the life of another person, because he had none of his own.
Terrifying film! The US has tens of thousands of pages of law thanks to Bush-Cheney which allows the Department of Homeland Security here to LEGALLY do what the Stasi did de facto. The PATRIOT Act needs to be removed from the U.S. Code.
Are you out of your MIND??? It's the Democrats that are funding hundreds of thousands of new law enforcement officers, billions in electronic surveillance equipment, urban assault vehicles, high tech crowd control devices etc. Just google Biden-crime. It's all right there. Obviously you were one of the sucker lefties that voted for "change", and didn't realize you bought the newest happy meal fad in feel good nationalism police state socialism. Yep, it's true. There's one born every minute.
Amazing movie....incredible to think it was not that long ago...spying...everything...ve ry intense and gripping. So very sad the Ulrich Muhe died so young. He's awesome!
