The communism was at its strongest and toughest in Romania and East Germany. Neither Hungary, nor Poland were as communist as East Germany was. You wouldn't believe how oppressive the regime was in East Germany and Romania..Poland, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria etc..they were nothing compared to the Stasi of GDR. I wonder how fast the east germans woke up from the fall..they had West Germany..

If you want I`ll discuss with you the discrepancies, I`ve found a lot of them. An example?? When the girl was hit by the truck and lays dying at the street NOBODY of the people that were standing around helped her. That is to underline the "cruelty" in East Germany (trick of the regisseur). The real reaction would have been: screaming, ALL PEOPLE would run to her to help, someone would call the ambulance... East Germans lived solidarity much more than west germans could ever imagine!

I watched this film because I admire Ulrich Mühe. And he was really great in it! So sad that he already passed away... BUT despite this incredible actor - DON`T BELIEVE that this film portrays real life in East Germany back then!!!! It shows the IMAGINATION of a West German nobleman (the regisseur) of East Berlin, don´t expect understanding of what really happened on the streets and in the life of normal people. It`s a shame because he could have asked 1 mio former inhabitants of East Berlin...

Sometimes when we are in danger, God sends his angels to protect us. Sometimes when we feel alone, there is a silent friend watching over us with those sad eyes waiting to be watched silently back on, by us. May his soul rest in peace.

@Somesubjekt Imagine you were born in Poland, Czechoslovakia or Hungary. You would have no chance for a better life at all! East Germany had at least... West Germany.
Escape, die fighting, rot in prison or live and STFU- the only choices until 89.

anyone else reckon he looks like kevin spacey?
R.I.P Ulrich Mühe. What a great actor. It makes me so sad to know that we won't see his mesmerizing look on our screens anymore.
