@BelligerentPacifist You're right. Nowhere in Islam is it required for you to change your name if you convert. The only reason to change a name would be if your name meant something bad. I have maintained my full birth name (a Hindu Brahmin first and middle name, and a last name which has variations in spelling and can be used by all faiths in India) even if conservative Muslims tell me that I should change it.

@mateah83 lol, yea he said "onaj je peder", "that one is gay". I dont see how he can say that since, at least in Bosnia, us people of the Balkans do that. He's been Americanized

@bilalbahi Many names now considered Muslim names are not Arabic, some are Persian and African etc. When the Sahaba accepted Islam they did not change their names except for a very few. In reality we can't really speak of Muslim names but more appropriately we can say popular names of Muslims. Many Persians became Muslim and so now we associate their names with Islam. If we could get enough people called George to convert to Islam then even George might become a popular Muslim name. Allah hafiz.

@smallpotatoes989 That is not what he was saying. "Islam will dominate" is God's project not ours. The person possibly saw one of the ways that could happen in this video.

@bilalbahi What makes a Muslim name?
Being Arabic?
Your name, I infer, is Bilal, but isn't that an Ethiopian name?
Being from an example of an ummah, this one or the ones gone?
If then I named my daughter Elisabeth, which is the supposed name of the mother of Yahyaa A. S., would people see it as a Muslim name?
ma'assalaamh.

I hate it when they make you change your name for no reason other than their ignorance. It's our cultural sunnah, not the sunnah of the Last Messenger S. A. W.
