Illinois State Representative Paul Froehlich (D-Schaumburg) explains why he took a leadership role in passing the national popular vote legislation in Illinois and notes that many prominent Republicans, including Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole all called for the abolition of the Electoral College, a bolder move than reforming the Electoral College with a state-based agreement to cast electoral votes for the winner of the national popular vote.
