I teach math at a private HS in Seattle. I also have issues with the Disc. series, but your example is off the mark.
I find the axiomatic approach to teaching algebra to be extremely unhelpful in teaching mathematical skills. You affirm the identity property? Teaching the identity property does not facilitate algebraic skill, in my experience.
I also want to discuss some of the benefits of discovery learning (along with pitfalls), but the character count here is too small. I'll email instead.
