Mizuiro no Waltz (Waltz in Light Blue)
Words: Ko Fujiura Music: Toroku Takagi
The record of this song, first sung by Futaba Akiko, was released in February 1950. It immediately became popular as the sweet melody of this song helped soften the temper of the Japanese people who had still been suffering from the aftereffects of WWII.

The Paris-trained composer Takagi was said to be highly critical and disdainful of the "trite and humdrum" melodies of the then-popular Enka, which were composed largely in the Pentatonic scale, 5 notes per octave. Takagi believed that this song could be sung properly only by those who had received Western vocal training.

I learned this song in the early 1950's. Although I liked this song very much I was never impressed as deeply and profoundly as I hear Mori Masako sings here. Masako is truly the best singer not only in her genre, but she could have easily been a world renowned classical soprano of our time.
