A clarification - back when I was doing the subs, I got the meaning of the word "Batave" wrong - as it appears, it rather means "Netherlandian woman" and has a sexual connotation (see also http://www.proz.com/kudoz/French/ling...)
Thanks for the kind people who pointed it out in the comments.

I am a Voice Major, Choral Conductor, Gigging Musician, and a Voice Teacher. I would encourage my students to sing their songs like this man. Music is an art. Art has a purpose. If he were to sing this song more technically correct he would be compromising its message, which is its art. Good singing, is about clearly communicating a particular message, and Jaques Brel is a MASTER at that. Pavarotti is trying to impress people, Brel is trying to change them. There's a time for both.

I'm not sure i agree with you. He's one of the very few singers that actually sweat on each song, and I'm pretty sure it's not because of the heat. Now I haven't studied music or anything so I may not be qualified to judge this, but as a humble listener I'm really impressed of much he is really involved and CARES about what he says. Very unique, in my opinion.

But as I said, i have no qualifications to judge this.

I totally agree. Brel, here, meant "dutch" and used "batave" because of poetry choices. I'm happy to see that I'm not the only "French" to battle, for years, against this error about the "boat" translation (I would add that in spite of this detail, I like the quality of the translation in this video). Aucun francophone ne voit de bateau dans cette phrase :)

Thanks blablaben123 - That's what I meant when I said, in a bit too quick way, "german". You're right, more precisely, "batave" refers to nederlands, in "normal" French, and "nederland women" in the specific context of the song. That's the way this word should be understood here, Your clarification is right.

Spot on mate. It's all in the feel. Piaf's voice was all over the place, but the message was clear.
