Gerard "Gerry" Adams, MLA, MP (Irish: Gearóid Mac Ádhaimh; born 6 October 1948) is an Irish republican politician and abstentionist Westminster Member of Parliament for Belfast West. He is the president of Sinn Féin, the political party at the top of the latest Northern Ireland election polls amidst a three-way split in the traditionally dominant unionist vote. Sinn Féin is the second largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly and fifth largest party in the Republic of Ireland.

From the late 1980s onwards, Adams has been an important figure in the Northern Ireland peace process, initially following contact by the then Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) leader John Hume and subsequently with the Irish and British governments and then other parties. In 2005, the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) indicated that its armed campaign was over and that it is now exclusively committed to democratic politics. Under Adams, Sinn Féin changed its traditional policy of abstentionism towards Oireachtas Éireann, the parliament of the Republic of Ireland, in 1986 and later took seats in the power-sharing Northern Ireland Assembly. However, Sinn Féin retains a policy of abstentionism towards the Westminster Parliament, but since 2002, receives allowances for staff and takes up offices in the House of Commons.

The Waco Siege began on February 28, and ended violently 50 days later on April 19, 1993. The siege began when the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) attempted to execute a search warrant at the Branch Davidian ranch at Mount Carmel, a property located nine miles (14 km) east-northeast of Waco, Texas. On Feb. 28th, shortly after attempting to serve the warrant, an intense gun battle erupted, lasting nearly 2 hours. In the aftermath of this armed exchange, four agents and six followers of David Koresh were found to have been killed. Upon the ATF's failure to execute the search warrant, a siege was begun by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This siege ended 50 days later when a second assault on the compound was made, and then fire engulfed the compound. Seventy-six people (24 of them British nationals) died in the fire, including more than 20 children, two pregnant women, and Koresh himself.

  • Peter Hitchens has absolutely no idea about Northern Ireland, and I find it amazing that a man so respected and intelligent could hold these factually inaccurate views, whatever his politics are.

  • i sympathise with the plight of the IRA but the major distinction between geree adams and nelson mandela is violence. Nelson Mandela achieved his aims by spending 27 years unjustly imprisoned and by winning a long fight for civil rights and presidency. He ensured not only a mixture of white and blacks in his own cabinet but tried to make it happen throughout the whole country. He in fact tried to quell angry black communities who were leading towards violence and the politics of revenge.

  • Northern Ireland was only a democracy only after it was undemocraticly created, it was created against the wishes of the vast majority of Irish people so suit a minority of Protestant wannabe Brits on the Island of Ireland, Thats like taking a part of England thats a majority Muslim community and letting the middle east rule it even though they are a minority in England

  • The Hitchens Brothers are formidable. Enough said.

  • @cott2696 stupid people often neglect to acknowledge that distinction

  • @tamkukushka How can you possible call somone thick for opposing the grotesque view that NI was akin to apartheid south africa and that gerry adams was the equivalent of nelson mandela.. Yes catholics suffered discrimination implemented by protestants. However the british introduced reform after reform to deal with the greivances of catholics. There was no excuse for thirty years of violence!

  • @tamkukushka why is it thick? I think he's (woefully) misguided rather than stupid personally.

  • .... "evidence was obtained from advanced fingerprint techniques to link people to documents. By 2005 the team had identified 2000 people from their prints with a further 1,015 sets of prints outstanding". My point is that there is nothing in that quote about MI5 collusion with loyalists. All I'm asking you to do is to back up your claim that MI5 not the british state but MI5 specifically was involved in collusion with loyalist and you can't do it.

  • @jonoessex Now THAT'S the very DEFINITION of denial. I've just pasted word for word what was written in the Stevens Inquiry about British state collusion with loyalists and you admit you've read it yourself yet try to dismiss it out of hand because it's been sourced from Wikipedia, and your point is?

  • @OpeningSalvoe Well you seem to be quoting from the wikipedia entry on the subject which I've just read. My dispute with you is over whether there was MI5 collusion with loyalists. I have read nothing in the stevens inquiries to suggest that MI5 (not the RUC or Army) but MI5 spent years colluding with loyalists as you said.
