Winter's here, and you're probably cranking the heat. But hold your thermostatic enthusiasm: high temps in your home lead to high utility bills -- not to mention a high price paid by the earth. In today's episode, Umbra offers tips for staying warm without planetary or pecuniary peril.

"Ask Umbra" is the first video series produced by GristTV. Look for new video tips for greening your life from Umbra every other week.

  • Our temp is set at 58 all the time. We dress like it's winter in winter. I'm setting here in my thermals, sweats, thick hand knitted socks and a hoodie, I'm comfy. Layers :)

  • 55 degrees at night? I have tried this and woke up in the middle of the night freezing and having to pee! I even wear sweats, double socks, etc under 2 quilts.

I think 65 degrees might be a tad more agreeable...and I wont catch pneumonia.

If you can do all of this without breathing you're a good pot smoker

  • been using 08000mumdad and it really saves a some bucks.

  • wear thermals.....

  • Wrong. Thermal energy does not have "momentum" the way a car does. You will always save more energy by turning the heat down/off than you will use heating the house back up again, whether you turn it off for 1 hour or 1 year.

  • I think it was a great video.

  • well, you will use more energy to RE-heat the home when you are in it. so really, your plan is not working to the best.

  • why do you do this?

  • Wow she can tell you what you already know and radiant heating cost a ton so only makes sense if you are building a new house.
