Thank you for posting this thoughtful perspective. Another quality that has always impressed me about Ashkenazy, is that he does not only use the weight of his arms, but his entire upper body, to great effect. I remember a live performance of Prokofiev's 8th Sonata. In the last movement, he demonstrated great flexibility and an almost athletic, saltatory quality (like a spring) in activating his lower back to achieve greater effect. It was like you said, active, playing. Moskovskaya schola!

He is certainly one of the great pianists of our era - technically precise and passionate yet tender and nuanced. I was just listening to his performance of Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C Sharp Minor Op.3 No.2 and think his interpretation is one of the best, and most similar to the "recording" (on a piano roll) of Rachmaninoff's own performance of that piece.

Thank you, you are obviously a musician of the soul. I am a singer, trained on other instruments, but always trying to learn even at a late time in life. I understand much from what you say. I appreciate Ashkenazy so very much, have for many years. Thank you. You are a good teacher, and many should learn from you.
Try to say something about Cyprien Katsaris :)
