Today we have the wonderful Renata Tebaldi singing Rossini's 'La regata Veneziana' from a 1965 concert. Introduced by Dr. Boyd Neel. Tebaldi sings in Venitian dialect.

Well, Ponselle, Wunderlich, Merrill, singers of that nature. But as I said, there is some 'raw' quality in Corelli and Tebaldi's voices which is simply addicting. Can't describe it.

I agree that those voices are addicting; they bypass all the regulations and all the stops, not formal beauty, they are too luxuriant to be nicely trimmed and clipped. They are ecstatic excess. Ponselle, though, sometimes allows herself to go there.
