I did this plein air sketch of the Laughing Buddha Statue at Hsi Lai Temple in LA, on March 16, 2010.

Medium: self made shikishi board, waterbrush, sumi ink with indigo.

"Don't worry, be happy!"

It is said that this statue represents a real Buddhist monk who lived over 1000 years ago in China. Now his statue is carried to bring good luck, joy and prosperity. In Japan he is called Hotei and he is a statue often found in homes and businesses throughout the world. He is also known as the Laughing Buddha and he is wealthy, happy and generous. He is said to bestow his gifts on those who rub his belly.
