@gretjoz not exactly *spoilers ahead*

Cocoon wasn't destroyed. The fal'cie were though. Fang and Vanille's focus was actually to "become ragnarok and destroy orphan" which would cause cocoon to drop out of the sky. That's what happened, but since they destroyed Orphan and THEN became Ragnarok, they simply used Ragnarok's power to build a crystal spire that would keep Cocoon from smashing into Gran Pulse, thus saving (most of) Cocoon.
