GameBabble: Ep 3 - Golden Axe: Beast Rider

We're FINALLY back thanks to a new stand-in capture device (my old capture card psuedo-died, preventing me from doing new episodes).

I get a bit rambly here. Heck, I TOTALLY forgot to mention the blandness of the world/beasts and the game wreckingly annoying mages.

Also, gotta be honest, I only played to stage 3. That's as far as I could get in the 2 weeks I had this rented. It took me multiple sessions to get through a single stage because they're so incredibly boring. As such, I don't think my verdict would have changed. The combat wasn't getting any deeper and the mages weren't getting any less irritating.

I'm glad I didn't get that game. I've played a few hack and slash games like Conan and Conan is way better than Golden Axe: Beast Rider. Even the 16-bit Golden Axe games are way better. By the way, who's the chick with the crab claws?

"The Shiomanekis from the Crab Nebula". Random background character from the anime Idol Project. Apparently an alien idol singer...from the crab nebula. Sadly they are never animated, the camera just pans briefly past them during one scene.

Back in the day, Golden Axe wasn't about the beasts; it was about fighting alongside your friends and family to see who could kick the most ass and steal the most magic potions from the elves.

This game is so "improved" from the previous ones that it loses that nostalgic feeling. Why only one character to choose from instead of 3 (or more)? Why use beasts as a GIMMICK? Who's that woman supposed to be? I don't recognize her.

If they removed "Golden Axe" from the title, would it even matter?

This is 100% true. Honestly I expected alot worse from this but what's here is still really not very good.

Beasts WERE, however, a big part of what made Golden Axe UNIQUE. They weren't the main draw, but they stood out.

Still, yeah, Beast Rider sucked. Didn't suck as much as I expected but it was not good.

I need to download Revenge of Death=Adder at some point. Saw it at an amusement park, but I didn't think to play it. Was playing the 6 player X-men cabinet instead.

Although the screen wasn't in very good condition, and it was a two player cabinet instead of the four player one.

I ran into Revenge of Death=Adder all the time in the good old days. It still needs a good home port. Heck, I think if they made it an XBLA title it would still do very well for it's self.

this game needs a few things to become an average game!

#1 fixed camera angle

#2 a real block and evade button(to eliminate the colored attack system)

#3 weapons,combos and magic upgrades

#4 map or guide to know what you got to do or where to go

#5 variety of enemies and bosses

#6 better graphics

#7 new game +

#8 a up to 3 co-op challenge where you can choose to play any of the 3 golden axe characters

I just beat the game and completed the trials and agree with your final conclusion. It is a mediocre game, not great but not terrible either. I do feel the reviews were overly harsh on this game, especially IGN.

I am very surprised to hear it was in development for so long, it felt like a quick license cash in to me. There are moments of brilliance in the game where the combat flows smoothly, but it's just not intuitive. I liked the art style though, they tried to evoke Frazetta, which is nice

@blizzbubble ~ EEEEr, why the fuck does he have to dress to impress to do a fucking video game review from his own home?? I mean you as well as I and I am guessing everyone else that clicked on his video did so in order to see what was advertised not to see a fashion show, you box of douche bags. Oh & those evade or parry colors almost drove me insane the first few plays. : )

Reminds me of the Zelda series when it went 3D, very good gameplay on Zelda, not so good here
