Brilliant. Heard him in NY in the '70s, doing Hoffman, the Duke and Rodolfo in Luisa Miller. He was fantastic, just fantastic.
I knew a guy who was a couple of years ahead of him at Juilliard, and my pal was doing Boheme, with Neil covering him. My pal had to be late for an orchestra rehearsal, and when he arrived, Neil was singing the 3rd act brilliantly. My pal said he just sneaked out, and came the next day to rehearsal. He just wasn't about to follow Shicoff's thrilling singing. Ha!
I've seen over 100 performaces in Vienna State opere, and the house rarely goes really mad during the performance, but after Shicoff singing Lenski in the old production of Jevgenij Onjegin, they did - over 10 minutes of ovations! :D
I remember being at Carnegie hall in 1984 and Neil sang this for the Richard Tucker foundation just as well as this recording, it bounced and echoed off the back walls with a rich beauty, the house gave him great applause.

A fantastic rendition of this beautiful aria. He sings this with such passion. I don't speak Russian, but it sounds very authentic.

Nobody in our time sang it as well as Neil did on both of his complete recordings of it and live. Here he is in his prime! Bravo.
