Moving onwards, this is the second cup in Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, the Graffiti Cup. It's named after Jet Set Radio Future, a game released for the original Xbox. It's about a group of street punks living in future Tokyo who rebel against Rokkaku and his corporate empire, who have bought much of the city, by spraying graffiti all over the place. The objective of the game is to skate around finding good spots to tag while avoiding the police (and later on, yakuza goons hired by Rokkaku). The original game, Jet Set Radio (called Jet Grind Radio in North America due to trademark reasons), preceded Tony Hawk Pro Skater and is actually the first popular skating video game.
Jet Set Radio Future is represented in this game through Beat as a playable character and three courses.
Again, this is the Wii version. I've chosen Knuckles this time, as I havent used him until now.
Race #1
Tokyo-to
Shibuya Downtown
Song: Fly Like a Butterfly
This game looks pretty impressive for the Wii. I'm glad SEGA has acknowledged that the Wii is at least more powerful than the PS2 and is capable of the same gameplay as PS3/360 games. All the buildings, elaborate decorations, and moving parts. I think there's a jet that takes off in the HD version that isn't present here though. The main thing separating Shibuya Downtown from the other courses we've seen before is a huge jump. Every character can do at least three tricks here, which leads to a massive boost. However, this only happens if you take the upper path when the course splits--and if you didn't pay attention, you may not have even known there's a split. Towards the end of the race, you can see a rather annoying trait the computer players do, which is to hit you with everything they've got towards the end of the race. You'd think that spending the first five-sixths of the race in 1st place, I'd spend the last sixth in 1st place too, but you'd be wrong.
Race #2
Curien Mansion
Outer Forest
Song: Into the Dark
Curien Mansion is the setting for House of the Dead, though this game refers to it as simply "Curien Mansion" and the profiles refer to the game as "HOTD." Is there some sort of censor against the word "dead" that Sumo Interactive has to comply with? Outer Forest begins in the courtyard, moves into the church, and then into the haunted forest. It pulls off the haunted-house theme decently, though I much prefer the later Curien Mansion courses as they have you explore the area in greater detail. There are zombies listlessly stumbling about the place; make sure you don't collide with one or you'll crash. Don't they know there's a race going on? I mean, in SEGA Superstars Tennis, they were watching the match and keeping their eyes (or what's left of them) on the ball.
House of the dead!? seriously!?
