I know (intellectually and experientially) plenty, both for and against the Church, Christianity, dogma, the Bible, & recognize that these islands of facts (or logic) are not coherent. I can deny any cluster of them, but not if I crave the truth. I could say that God is indifferent, absent, or cruel, but considering the blessings in my life I prefer to say that He is not what I imagine.

I think deep down everyone knows the essential Truth about God: He is there, He is perfect, and He truly loves us. A big part of that is that He does expect a lot from us. His Son is the role model, in that.

When it comes to the Church, there is the 'human organization', which is fallible; and the incorruptible, spiritual Church, which includes every soul that is saved in Christ.

And the 'human organization' has been under siege since it was kicked off. There were always attempts at hijacking Her and using Her power of influence for very nasty purposes. A number of these attempts were very successful, and this includes quite a few in these last 200 years - we all know about those.

But the attempts at infiltration/subversion started quite a long time ago, and even Paul and Peter talk about those. From then on, it was an incredible 2000 year old history.
