CUGS Global Vantage Point Lecture Series: "Shallow Urbanization: Policy Experiment in Chongqing," presented by William Yale, Trinity Class '12, and Chang Liu, Trinity Class '12. Over the last thirty years, China's urbanization rate has increased from 18% in 1978 to 47% in 2010. However, more than 160 million of those counted as urban populations are migrant workers who only participate in city life in a shallow way and are not integrated into cities. This research aims to investigate this phenomenon of shallow urbanization for its causes, manifestations, and impacts on the economy. It further aims to examine the policy experiments of Chongqing for their effectiveness to resolve the problem. Presented on March 13, 2012 at Trinity College, Center for Urban and Global Studies.
