Lets imagine a man is setting up a farm, we'll call him Jake, and his father, we'll call him Arnold, gives him a horse to help him with ploughing etc.

Arnold: "Here, son, I give you this horse as a gift to help you on your new farm."

Jake: "That's mighty kind of you, Dad, but I'd better check his teeth to make sure he's healthy."

Arnold: "Son, you wound me, do you think I'd give you a duff horse?"

Jake: "Sorry Dad, I shouldn't look a gift-horse in the mouth."
