  • I ran these trucks under quite a strain especially on the rear axle. They will strip the spider gears occasionally on one of the rears or the one that is put under the right overloaded conditions such as letting the clutch out and with several thousand pounds on a boom something this truck was not intended to do.

  • yes but if that front axle breaks it is likely to damage the axle case. Sprag must shift or it will break an axle. The transfer case plunger is spring loaded so that the sprag will automatically be shifted in the forward position which is out (plunger out which is forward)

When you reverse the truck it pushes this shifter plunger inward to reverse the sprag unit.

  • Hey youall, I know where spare heat valves are for your gas reo manifold. these were NOS but a little rusty but will clean up. I can get more of them for anyone interested. email me through youtube and I'll help. This bolts between the carb spacer plate and the actual manifold . Requires a gasket set which I can supply one or two of them. This place has several of them rusting away. But were new. They are at Steward Equipment in New Bern NC I'd be willing to get one or two for somebody.

  • Yes the old model like the one in the video had a mechanical shift linkage that goes between the transmision shifter top and the transfer case. It shifts a dual ended sprag unit that is a slip drive which has to be reversed with the linkage from the trans. If this linkage is not there and you back the truck up you will snap a front axle which damages the front axle housing. Best remove the axle cap off one side of the front end if unsure that the sprag drive is not shifting properly

  • if the shift mechanism is not working to reverse the sprag unit in the transfer case nose when you reverse the truck, you can snap a front axle (if you have both axle caps on the front axle) Later model diesel M35A2 used an air shift for the sprag unit. The sprag is a slip joint that allows the front axle not to receive power automatically unless drive power is needed This system has to be shifted for reverse. Old models had a manual shift linkage which must be in place (axle caps on)

  • This truck was made so that if the army were at war for 50 years and had some parts the truck would last that long or perhaps much more. The chassis brakes trans are same in maintenance costs as the diesel. The diesel trans reversed 4th and 5th gear so 5th gear in the diesel is where 4th is on the gas. Did so they could make an overdrive in hte diesel trans otherwise it is the same case.

  • i had a 1959 reo that was gas it was fun to drive butwas vary cost lee to matain

  • Too much fun to be legal!!!
