@businessdisruption Tautology and pleonasm aren't actually the same thing

Check out the series "the meaning of life with gay byrne"

Actually it's verbal irony. while trying to describe what is poetic, Fry claims that Robert Graves thinks speech should be direct and concise. It's ironic because he uses two words that mean the same thing, tautology and pleonastic, which mean "using different words to define the same thing.
Irony can be defined as an action contrary to its intended effect. Fry was complementing Robert Graves' form of speech and did so by contradicting what Graves said was poetic......

Or self-referential...

"It's tautological, it's pleonastic."
What an ironic statement.

probably the best guest ever for a 1 on 1 with no audience.
i think i may love stephen fry, national treasure!

I respect both of these men so much

I agree with them.... Looking in at our world, 'fuck' wouldn't be nearly as bad as saying 'torture', what with it's meaning. It's kind of like... if I was introduced to Coke and Pepsi and such now, I wouldn't get near it because of the color of the drink.

I love this! :D
Intelligent Brits on a chat show on US TV!!! What`s going on?
No wonder they couldn`t get an audience ;-)
There`ll be unbiased political news shows next...

Ferguson keeps commenting on how he 'forgets' he's doing a television show.
I cannot believe how true this actually is. That jolt of excitement he got when talking about cocaine - he completely forgot where he was.
Cannot thank you enough for posting this. It is truely amazing. Bare, frank, raw conversation on important topics. Television at its best.
