It's usually down up down like an alternate picking but with a brief pause. I would suggest to use a metronome to really get it down tight.

what format pick is better to use for it ? thin or thick?

@joost066 Depends on the gauge of your strings. I use Dunlop Ultex .73s. I hear a lot of people recommending heavier picks, but that just doesn't work for me. I also use custom gauge strings, 10-46s. I find the Ultex picks grip the best too. Tortex slip out of my fingers all the time.

i need help i cant do this i seem to always get caught on the string on the upstroke please help man love the lessons by the way.

@barneybud1 Don't tense up, grip pick too hard or dig into the string. Also, hold pick at a slight angle to help 'cut' through the string.
