Hilary Hahn plays Preludio of Bach's Partita for Solo Violin No. 3 at the Grammy's on Feb. 8, 2009. She was nominated for two categories for her Sibelius and Schoenberg Violin Concertos Album released in 2008-Best Classical Album and Best Instrumental Soloist Performance with Orchestra, and ended up winning the Best Instrumental Soloist Performance with Orchestra, which will be her second Grammy.

I apologize in advance for the poor audio and video quality and plan to upload another from the direct source. (And sorry for the sound at 2:44 - that was my email going off...)

EDIT: Sorry I never could upload this from the actual file so this will have to do. And just so you know, the original sound quality was much better...

Disclaimer: I'm not trying to infringe on any copyrights, so if anybody has a problem with this video, please tell me and I will take it down immediately. Otherwise, enjoy!

  • Perfect. :)

I wish I could play as well as I could at home because when I get in front of an audience, my brain turns off!

  • That mic makes it sound so tinny. Her violin actually produces a really rich sound. Great performance, though!

  • Sounds like she's playing on a street corner. I can hear traffic in the background.

  • the recording somehow seems a little faster than usual....

  • not often you see classical musicians at the Grammys these days..this is refreshing!

  • @ShadowscytheInfinite I think it is just nice, not too long. This is a personal preference and it has nothing to do with skill. When it comes to Bach's , a lot of people fix it the pattern in a classic way. Again, it is music which reflects different people's mind,-------------- whether it is Bach's makes no difference.

  • @BestAmateurViolinist you're SUPPOSED to hold out certain notes longer to HELP the phrasing. but she does hold it a bit too long.

  • @hilaryhahnfan relax and focus on the music, if you cannot play with audiences then close your eyes and pretend no one is around. But anyhow with practise you there shouldn't be a problem. Relax... You should be relaxed when playing a violin or any instrument.

  • @BestAmateurViolinist You are actually quite right, holding a note here and there for emphasis is fine, but it's every few notes on this recording!! And as for those people have suggested you post a recording maybe they should!! To those people I would like to say having an opinion about how a piece should be played does not mean that one thinks that oneself can play better than the person playing. The best way I can explain it is that if I could play like this, I would not play like this!!!

  • @BestAmateurViolinist she's been playing Bach every day sense she was 8 plus she is playing in front of an audience of 30 million+. I don't think you have a place to critique...

  • @BestAmateurViolinist Maybe that's how she interprets it. There is no right or wrong way to interpret a piece of music. Just a different way. For example, you may play it all straight 16ths. I play it with slightly elongated notes at the end of my phrases. Just because it's different doesn't mean it's bad.

  • @BestAmateurViolinist Then why don't you upload a video and SHOW Ms. Hahn how to do it?
