How could things possibly be worse? If drugs were legalized (and therefore taxable and regulatable) prices would plummet, and the drug cartels would lose 99% of their revenue stream.

This of course means that the drug cartels pour billions of dollars in bribes to politicians to kill any potential legalizagion measure. Politicians sure love that Plato, don't they?
