Two Tibetan monks escape to India after more than a decade behind bars. We'll tell you their story coming up.
CHAN:
Two Tibetan monks escaped to northern India to seek refuge from the Chinese communist regime. They served twelve years in prison for posting free Tibet posters. Conditions were hard in the Tibetan prison and torture was frequent.
[Lobsang Palden, Escaped Tibetan]:
"A court had convicted us of 'counter revolutionary crimes' in April 1994 and sentenced us to twelve years rigorous imprisonment. All of us who were imprisoned were tortured by the Chinese administration."
After the two were released in 2006, they weren't allowed to enter Tibetans monasteries or conduct religious ceremonies. They had no option but to escape from the Tibetan capital posing as businessmen.
Activists claim that more than a million Tibetans have died since the Chinese communist regime occupied Tibet in 1965. Every year over two thousand Tibetans flee to India.
