Family Reunification
CMI is a national leader in advocating on immigration law and policy. We are able to harness the collective wisdom of our 1,852 Fellows to contribute positively to the major immigration issues facing Canada.
Canada is a nation of immigrants and immigration will continue to play a crucial role in the growth of this country. Reuniting immigrants with their parents and grandparents in Canada has always been a fundamental aspect of Canada's approach to immigration because the bonds of family add strength to our entire society.
That's why we need our political leaders to start talking about their visions for immigration now. In this election, CMI wants Canadians to consider these issues regarding family reunification:
Citizenship and Immigration Canada is decreasing the number of visas issued to parents and grandparents from 16,800 to 11,200 for 2011. This means that almost 150,000 people will be waiting in line for 11,200 visas
In Manila, visas for parents and grand parents will be reduced 32%
In New Delhi, visas for parents and grand parents will be slashed 45%
In Hong Kong, visas for parents and grand parents will be cut by 60%
Overall, Canadian families will have to wait 14 years before they can be reunited with their parents and grandparents.
This is why CMI has produced a video and embarked on a national ad campaign. We want to make Canadians aware of the challenges facing the immigration system so that they can decide which party is best placed to tackle them. Take a look at our video and ads below and let your candidate know what you think.
