There was heated debate in Cape Town over Shell's proposal to mine for natural gas in the Karoo. Hosted by Golder and Associates at Kelvin Grove, Shell presented their draft Environmental Management Plan for fracking in the Karoo basin to around 300 people, the vast majority of whom were strongly opposed to the plan.
Lewis Pugh, the internationally renowned "Human Polar Bear" delivered a remarkably emotive speech in support of the Treasure the Karoo Action Group (TKAG). Pugh, known as a passionate spokesperson for the environment, is a driving force behind the Treasure Karoo Action Group (TKAG), which is coordinating protest action in an effort to save the Karoo from irreparable environmental harm.

@mackhandlebrot - why the hate? One can drive and a car and applaud this video, this speech quite easily without being a hypocrite. Just because I drive does not mean I condone the devastation of land, the killing of activists, where's the hypocrisy? I don't know anything about this guy but at least he's trying to do something good, no? What are you doing? Except for slagging people off.

Wonderful his man knows how to talk to people in a respectful manner I hope he goes far !
If the CAPE PARTY got the required seats needed to conduct a referendum I will lobby for the mineral rights of farmers to remain theirs although the Constitution means they in fact do furthermore however the Karoo gas and land belongs to the people who live there and not to Shell who have not rights to it at all nor to the incomes from it .
Indeed better to Switch ESKOM off The Karoo and use Solar

1) If you applauded this video, then got in your car and drove home you're a filthy hypocrite.
2) Lewis, if you go to the Arctic in summer and see it thaw... it's because it's summer. No really, it happens every year. It's why real polar explorers go out in winter.
3) "We are proud of what we have achieved in this young democracy". We... we? How long have you been here?
Well done, it's rare you get to see one man read so many platitudes.

That was BY FAR the TOTAL OPPOSITE to "a remarkably emotive speech". He read the whole thing from his notes!
Show me a person passionate enough about this to talk without notes, and not be so boring, and then I'll agree that it's emotive.
For such a sensitive and important topic, he really made it look like something he HAD to do. Lewis Pugh is a bad speaker, I think SA needs a better spokesperson against Shell. For real.

Excellent speech! I'm trying to get as many people as I can to boycott Shell and rather use Engen or even the French owned Total to fill up with petrol. Especially with the hikes in fuel costs when everyone fills their cars up in desperation - if NOBODY fills up at Shell I'm sure that would start getting a message through. Well, that's just one thing to do.
