Teaching is extremely complex. At the most fundamental level, however, to be effective, the teacher must engage learners mentally to find out what they are thinking. Dr. Mike Clough, Associate Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, says that if you do those two things well, the payoff is tremendous. Watch this 7 1/2-minute clip to see Dr. Clough model several techniques that may be used in small or large classes to engage students mentally and reveal their thinking while he leads a class on how to teach effectively.
Engaging students mentally is extremely important, the act of teaching is to help students learn something well enough, they can even remember it longer if they understand something themselves with guided aid from the teacher. But this can't be achieved without students' engagement or interactivity. This seems too obviously but many teachers still practice passive teaching, letting students sit still and passively listen to the lecture, so boring.

I love the feedback I get using whiteboards. I hadn't ever put a name to the "wait time" but have often used it to provoke additional answers. Now, I can see how to better use "wait time" to go beyond the answer I was hoping for. I strongly agree that it can thoroughly engage the class and provide me with instant feedback about how well I am teaching the material. Thanks.

Very interesting. I'll have to give the whiteboards it a try. :)

@crescentfreshcheo Have you been to schools who had Pepsi as a sponsor? I think every school I've ever been to carries Coke products only.

This video is amazing, despite the late 80's quality and graphics.
I love the instruction in this video, it is well thought out and very intelligent.
This is the first video on Google after searching for "How to teach effectively".
This video motivates me!
You sir are a true mentalist!!!
The product placement is obvious and weird, why was this shot at a coca-cola school?
