You don't need AVGas. These engines will run on low octane fuel; consider the war effort and availability. The popping is normal as it is idling and probably hasn't cleared out all the plugs (fouling). A common issue with the R975. The C4 is only slightly different than the C1 in that there is no front scavenger pump and the engine had some cost saving measures take into consideration. Also the sump was improved given there was only one oil pump.

Drive one of these, needs av gas but I still think the MKIII Pkv sounds better

ahh a radial engine we have a MK2 sexton self propelled gun at the royal armouries fort nelson here in england she has a pratt and whitney radial engine great sound

your saying about multibanks, i got to hear a very well tuned one a few years ago, my god it is amazingly quiet when idle!! beautiful

If it aint the fuel its a very bad recording.I want to hear a multibank running these radials are two a penny.They still make radials!

That is an incorrect statement. Continental made the R975 under license from Wright. I've got both C1 and C4 engine with Continental Data Plates.
