I have to say that that was a really sloppy pack-job. He had tons of space to pack the poles and everything else closer to the body.

I love my Osprey Kestrel 48. Great design, and cant beat the "ALL MIGHTY GUARANTEE ".

He packed the sleeping bag in the beginning and why do you need "basic survival gear" that's what your packs for. Gain some more experience before posting negative comments.

Real nice pack, just bought one exactly like that in 83 litre medium, for the long hikes. Very comfortable!
