Ants Vs. Termites, Vol #1

At a friends' house we moved an old log from the driveway and left behind were a couple dozen termites. They show up in the video as little white insects wandering around. Also visible are the black ants that have come looking for them.

Once one black ant stumbled upon the cluster, grabbed one and ran back to his nest, within minutes, there was a convoy of five or six running back and forth between the ant nest and where the termites were wandering around.

Once one ant makes it back to the nest, he more-or-less communicates to others that "there's more where this came from; just follow my trail back to the termites..."

That's pretty much what the ants do. How else could the following ants know where to locate the termites?

The main entrance to the ant nest is the round hole at the center of the picture at 8:51.

Not a very exciting video, I know, but insects have always interested me. I always loved watching ants, particularly when they are attacking "intruding" insects or have found a few for dinner.

In my 2nd video, I tried to concentrate more on the ants running back to their nest with their captures in their clutches. These ants were able to run the 12" or so back to their nest in a matter of seconds.

I always though it was neat how they managed to find their way back home. Even if one were able to be picked up and moved 10 feet on the other side of the nest, it would still somehow be able to "home in" on its nest and head more-or-less straight to it.

Great! I found termites today in my garden bed under the cardboard mulch (will never use them). I was in panic and saw one green ant attack the termites in front of my eyes....After that all our family carried green ants from all over the garden in dust pans and dropped right on top of the infested garden bed. Hours later, every ants were carrying termites!! and mulch was covered by green ants. I wish I filmed them too!
