@phalanster You're probably thinking of another Polish pianist, Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938). Other than beginning lessons with his mother and a few months at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin when he was 15, he was entirely self taught. He was also perhaps the greatest virtuoso technician of all time as well as the composer of lots of fantastically complicated and difficult piano music, including 51 murderously inventive elaborations on the Chopin Etudes.
