This process of the same chordal structure having multiple meanings is known in the classical theoretical tradition of the 19th century as " Merdheutigkeit" or multiple meaning. In jazz theory I found the expression Plurality ( Grove, 1972). In a research I did I related the concept to linguistics (heterossemy) and to the creative process. "PLURALITY: The creative process of ressignification of harmonic and melodic structures"

  • Hello from Canada, Thank you for the very helpfull lesson. Would you please share with me the string gauge that you use on the Telecaster? Are they round wound? Thanks again, Gary.

  • The strings are round wound by Ernie Ball (purple package) except for the E string I use GHS 0.12..

    mais uma vez!

    Abraços,

  • Polymorphism is not a good description of this process because the forms do not change, but their function.

  • @Shenanigasm

Scatterbrain sounds like (all notes on 6th, 4th, 3rd strings):

    8-7-9 (Am inversion)

    7-5-7 (G inversion)

    5-3-5 (F inversion)

    3-2-4 (Em inversion)

As we have no B or Bb in that chord, we could treat it as we need. Basically, I'll get chord function from tonality.

We can take Am7 as III in F-dur, then on V we would have C dominant 7 (with Bb).

We can take Am7 as VI in C-dur, then on I we would have C major 7(with B), and its jazz-basically played as C6\9 (x3223x), as you've correctly mentioned.

A good example of C6 as inversion is Radiohead's Scatterbrain. There goes downgoing Am chords in inversion with C in bass for Am etc.
