We are excited to announce the 2010 UIST Student Innovation Contest.

This year, the hardware we will be providing is an "adaptive keyboard": a keyboard whose appearance can change. Teams can register to receive one of these devices, create something spectacular, and demo their work at the UIST symposium being held in New York City from October 3-6, 2010.

Microsoft has made a long video that goes into more depth about the interactions possible with the keyboard:

  • is it possible to make the touch surface to act like a large touchpad?

  • @chachak3 Yes, the touch surface can send the touch information to the computer the keyboard is connected to.

  • This type of keyboard was already being sold by Art Lebedev 2 and a half years ago. Just search for "Optimus Maximus Keyboard" on Google...

  • @Clynt1purcell This is a contest to create a unique keyboard with special features. University students are allowed to add anything that they think will be useful to the keyboard. It's not pointless, it's an opportunity to make this device not pointless and let students innovated, get recognized, and have fun.

  • I would buy one

  • The last words are completely unrecognisable. You have to be a student... WHERE?

You swallow the words and forget to arcitulate at the end of the sentence (as many people do).

  • Няшно ^_^

  • @linuxmasterz - Guess again. Each key of the Optimus is a mini-display. (Potentially why it was delayed so long and estimated to be VERY expensive.) Differently, ALL of the keys on the MS keyboard sit atop the SAME display and use optics in each key to project their small portion of the underlying display to the top of the key. Two different designs. Two different technologies. Two different production methods. Two different products. /watch?v=svjLIZKAHQI

  • This keyboard is patented in Russia in 2007. This is Artemy Lebedev's Optimus Keyboard. Microsoft, be ready for a suit! We will meet in court!

  • This idea does not seem to be original as it has already been doine by Optimus Maximus keyboard. Although not entirely the same but the idea of having display on keys itself is already there..
