There have been numerous reports of petition signature gatherers in Los Gatos misleading people in order to get them to sign a petition targeting the new Town Public Library. The petition is pitched as "fiscal responsibility." These signature gatherers, from out of town, are paid to get signatures.

We were surprised that this man kept talking after saying, "Let's just to turn this camera on" and then held the camera at pointed it at him! At first he acted almost proud about being recorded, by the end he was looking nervous. This was recorded in the Los Gatos Town Plaza Park, next to the flagpoles, near the corner of Main St. and North Santa Cruz Ave. on Sunday morning at approximately 10:00 A.M. during the Farmer's Market on June 7th, 2007.

According to a recent Los Gatos Weekly-Times article (6/2/2009), a signature gatherer told the manager of a local grocery store that he was there to register voters. In fact he was pulling this same stunt.

The man paying for all of this is an ex- town council member who repeatedly voted against a new library. He is the council member who was shamed into not running again because of ethics violations while on the town council (Google: "Steve Glickman ethics violations" for details).

The former council member denies that his signature gatherer employees are doing exactly what we caught this person doing. This type of misleading is a violation of election law.

If you were misled into signing the petition, please contact the Town of Los Gatos Clerk at 408-354-6834 to have your name removed.

If this petition gets to "special election" ballot as the ex-council member hopes, it will cost the town between $100,000 and $200,000 and could result in the loss of $14,000.000 of approved state funds for the new library.

  • Bravo! I love that this comes to light. Maybe Mr. Glickman should take up a hobby, like say knitting. A nice first project would be a scarf with a ball gag.

Too bad the state is going to take those RDA funds andleave the town with an IOU...such a shame.

  • This library is long overdue. Has Glickman ever been to the current one? It's only a couple steps from the council chambers. Los Gatos needs another facility more conducive to circulating information. I can't believe they would resort to these tactics to stop a library. That's just low.

  • WOW-- unbelievable - that they can get away with misrepresenting the petition - people will think that it WON'T affect the building of the new library and it will-- It will also cost Los Gatos money to fight this-- Bad- Bad petitioner
