Hello, I'm Rebecca Field with a UPI entertainment update on this Thursday, May 17, 2007.
Many fans are shocked with the results of last night's "American Idol." Melinda Doolittle was voted off leaving Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks to compete in the finale next week. Doolittle was an apparent favorite of the judges...Simon Cowell rated her number one on Tuesday's show. The 29 year old back-up singer from Tennessee sang "I am Woman" before leaving the Idol stage.
Rock and roll legend Bo Diddley is in intensive care after apparently suffering a stroke. His publicist says he was taken to a Nebraska hospital Sunday after he was noticeably acting disoriented. Tests show the stroke has impaired his speech. The singer was inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of Fame in 1987 and has continued to tour in the U.S. Diddley's 2006 tour raised funds for victims of hurricane Katrina.
Singer Beyonce is leading the way with the most nominations for the Black Entertainment Television Awards. She grabbed 6 nominations including top female R&B artist, video of the year for "Irreplaceable," and the viewers choice award. Jennifer Hudson, Ciara, Akon and Gnarls Barkley are each nominated in 3 categories. BET will also give the lifetime achievement award to Diana Ross. The ceremony will air live on June 26 from Los Angeles.
Paris Hilton will spend less time in jail than expected. Authorities say she'll spend 23 days in jail...that's nearly half of her original 45 day sentence. CNN says Hilton's good behavior earned her the reduced time behind bars. She'll reportedly be separated from the general inmate population...but just like everyone else she'll get an hour a day outside her cell to shower, go outside or make a phone call. Hilton was sentenced for violating her probation following a DUI charge.
Pop star Britney Spears is thanking her fans for their support. On her official website the singer says she's blessed to have such great people who care about her. Spears spent a month in rehab earlier this year but now she's heading back to the stage. She's reportedly working on a new album and has already performed in some small venues. Spears is continuing to work out at a southern California dance studio to get herself back into shape.
That's all for now. Thanks for watching today's entertainment update.
The problem is Jordin is a teenager and the vast majority of voters are teenagers, and this is true for most TV contests. So most teenagers would go for someone who's closer to them, and is still a good singer. However, Melinda is a much better singer, but her songs probably would not appeal to most teens who prefer mainstream pop, and its very obvious that Jordin will go into mainstream pop.So in actual fact, Melinda is still a better singer, but lost out mainly because of this reason.
